I must say, of all the cyber places you could have ended up, i’m certainly glad you chose to be here. Viewing my site is best accompanied by your choice of beverage; i recommend sweet tea, hazelnut macchiato, or prosecco. That, and 80's music, preferably from the breakfast club soundtrack.

10 Secrets to Balance: Health and Family First

February 18, 2015

See this guy and those pups? Nikki Santerre Photography_Family first_0001At the end of the day when the work is finished, they are the ones I come home to every night. Matt is my big dream supporting, fun loving, compassionate partner in crime. And it makes me sad to admit that there have definitely been times in the last two years that I’ve put the business before his feelings or opinions. That I’ve stayed up late working, leaving him and the pups alone on the couch for hours without so much as a conversation together before bed. I saw the error in this last year, and set out to change it, and thankfully, our home life has never been better.

For the first two years of my business, I wouldn’t even eat before I posted my blog post for the day (which is dangerous as I’ve struggled with borderline diabetes since I was 19). I set unrealistic expectations for myself, causing some nearly crippling anxiety.

So, why am I sharing all this with you?

Because I want you to know it doesn’t have to be this way. Saying “yes” to your family and health before your business is actually one of the best things you can do for your clients. I love what I do so much because I believe in the marriages my clients are entering into. And if I’m such an advocate for marriage, of course mine should be the priority before anything else! In terms of health, if I’m not taking care of myself, making sure I’m eating enough and getting enough sleep, I won’t be able to take care of my clients, which is one of my biggest priorities.

Keith Sweat said, “A lack of boundaries invites a lack of respect.” Boundaries in your business is completely healthy. Having them means you respect your marriage, and in turn respect your client’s marriages and can better serve them!

  1. Great advice! I especially love the Keith Sweat quote! So true!

  2. Kelly Ewell says:

It always sounds good and easy, but it’s so much harder to say “yes” to yourself!

  3. Natalie says:

Girl, this has been on my heart lately too! Awesome post!

  4. Great post! I’ve been working so hard in 2015 to set and keep realistic business boundaries for myself. And I’ve totally been the business owner who would wait to eat to get a few more items checked off of my to-do list, now I schedule small breaks to eat and enjoy a necessary latte.

  5. You’ve been sharing the most amazing life advice lately Nikki!
