5 Verses That Have Improved My Business

June 4, 2015

As a small business owner who is also a believer, I often look to the bible for advice and guidance in both my personal life and my business. I’m sure many people believe there should be a separation between the two, but my faith is deeply rooted inside my heart, and so I choose to let it permeate my life instead of compartmentalizing it.

These five bible verses have been both helpful and inspiring to me this year in running my business. I hope they’re helpful to anyone who might be struggling with a season of uncertainty, either in life or in business.

Colossians 3, 23-24: “Whatever you do, work as if serving The Lord and not men.”

Running a business can be hard, there’s no doubt about that, but I’ve found that on days where I choose to approach my work joyfully, as an honor given to me from God, well, those are the days I’m most inspired and serve my clients the best. It’s important for me to remember that the first goal of the work I’m doing is to honor The Lord, and not the industry.

1 Corinthians 16,14: “Let all that you do be done in love.”

Whether it’s dealing with a difficult client situation, or you have a disagreement with an industry professional, choose love when you speak to them. It’s easy to choose anger, to choose comparison, to choose bitterness, but remember that love always wins.

Galatians 6, 9-10: “Do not grow weary in doing good, for you will reap the harvest you in time. Therefore, if you have the opportunity to do good, do good to all people, especially those in your family of believers.”

It’s hard to find balance when running a small business, especially if you have a full time job or children on top of it. There are days that drain the life out of you, leaving you exhausted and void of inspiration. This verse helps me remember to persevere, to just keep going, because when the time comes the work I’m putting in now will pay off.

Philippians 2: “If you’ve learned anything from following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care – then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.”

There are so many opportunities in this industry to try to get ahead, to be in the eye of the public, to get attention. If you let that root itself into your heart so that is your ultimate goal instead of serving people well, loving your clients, and helping your peers, then you’ve truly missed the point. “Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.” That is my favorite part of this verse, and although I’ve struggled with it personally it’s an amazing reminder.

Romans 12, 1-2: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life – and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”

There have been so many times in the history of my business that I have doubted myself or the way I choose to run my business because I am so concerned with how I’m perceived in the industry. This verse helps me to remember that my life is not my own, and I shouldn’t care what anyone of this world thinks. My hope is in Jesus, and that’s the opinion that matters. I choose to fix my eyes, and especially in the last year, I have seen so much change because of it. More peace, more balance, more gratitude.

Ahh I needed this so much today! Especially that first one. The verse I’ve clung hard to recently is Luke 12:22-31, especially v. 23! “For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.”

  2. Kimmie says:

Oh Nikki, I am definitely going to be bookmarking this one!

I love to hear you heart behind each verse, time with the Lord is so intimate. It’s so sweet to read the way each verse says something to you, and how each verse captures your heart and propels you in one way or another.

I love you and your heart.
