I must say, of all the cyber places you could have ended up, i’m certainly glad you chose to be here. Viewing my site is best accompanied by your choice of beverage; i recommend sweet tea, hazelnut macchiato, or prosecco. That, and 80's music, preferably from the breakfast club soundtrack.

Creating Clean Images in Cluttered Spaces

March 17, 2015

Photographers know that on a busy wedding day or even during a lifestyle session in someone’s home, under perfect conditions every location will be styled and de-cluttered, but the reality is most of the time our brides are getting ready for their wedding day with a room of ten other girls, and our new mothers are busy learning life with a new baby, so picking up isn’t first on their priority list. It is our job as the photographer to both educate them and know how to make these conditions work for the better of the images you are producing for them.

In order to create clean images in a cluttered space, you need three things:

1) A blank wall in a clean corner of the room.

2) Good window light.

3) Crop and compose the image in camera to eliminate environmental distractions. This means choosing a lens with a focal length appropriate for the size of the room.

For example, in this first image (iPhone shot from my husband) you can see there are items on the bed that wouldn’t make for a clean image. By using my 50mm L lens, I was able to crop those things out, so in the second image you are only focusing on Brian, Jennie, and their interaction with baby Reagan. Nikki Santerre Photography_For Photographers_Creating Clean Images in a Cluttered Space_0001 Nikki Santerre Photography_For Photographers_Creating Clean Images in a Cluttered Space_0002The end results are beautiful, luminous, and free of the distractions present in the room!
