I must say, of all the cyber places you could have ended up, i’m certainly glad you chose to be here. Viewing my site is best accompanied by your choice of beverage; i recommend sweet tea, hazelnut macchiato, or prosecco. That, and 80's music, preferably from the breakfast club soundtrack.

The Hybrid Society

April 6, 2015

It was evident when I first began my journey into learning the fine art of film photography that there are several differences between the digital and film photography worlds. Film photographers tend to only share their work on their blog platform, whereas digital photographers tend to share their work in addition to personal content. The film community is also smaller and at least appears to be really exclusive because there are less film photographers in the industry and most of their businesses are more established. There has also been a huge movement in the digital world to share and educate fellow photographers, so I was surprised to find there are not many film photographers who regularly blog and share specific information regarding their film processes or even how to get started and learn how to shoot film. There were photographers who would answer my questions and give me guidance via email, and for that I am so grateful! However, there definitely aren’t as many resources for film and the tendency to share online isn’t as prevalent.

When I first became captivated by medium format, swooning over film tones and contrast, I desperately craved the knowledge to transform my work into this beautiful art. It took me almost a year and a half to really begin to understand the way my film camera worked, which film stock worked best for me, and to build a relationship with my lab before I ever even considered shooting film at a wedding. I made a lot of mistakes along the way, mistakes that, while they build character and helped me learn, could have be avoided if I had been given the proper tools.

I’ve realized that there are aspects to both sides of the industry that I love and that really work for the better of my business and to help me best serve my clients. I am such a firm believer in hybrid shooting and the hybrid business model I’ve been using, and I have decided to share what I’ve learned through a newsletter and creative community…The Hybrid Society!

Nikki Santerre Photography_Virginia Fine Art Film Wedding Photographer_Learning to shoot film_The Hyrbid Society_0002The Hybrid Society is a newsletter and creative community for photographers who are interested in learning more about film photography and how to incorporate it into their digital workflow. Each month, a new edition of the newsletter will be released to subscribers and will share content specifically tailored to the art of fine art film photography and what it means to run a “Hybrid” business.

If you’re interested in joining, you can subscribe by entering  your information into the subscription box to the left of this post!

The introductory newsletter will arrive to your inbox at the end of this week! In the coming months, I’ll be sharing about some starting points with selecting your first film camera, the difference between medium format and 35mm, what different film stocks look like, and finding and building a relationship with your film lab.

I’m so excited for this journey and would love to have you follow along!
