A slower season is upon us. Weddings have slowed down and there is more time for things we have less time for throughout the year. Time for family, time for our homes, time for projects we’ve been putting off.
I urge you, as an artist in this season, to do something that fuels your inspiration and drive to create even when you aren’t shooting what you might typically photograph.
Seven Ways to Stay Inspired During A Slower Season:
#1) Create what you want to be shooting. If you have an idea for a styled inspiration shoot, no matter how big or small, now is the time to make it happen. It will allow you to network with vendors, create work you can feel proud of, and continue to practice and improve your craft.
#2) Get a hobby. Last Christmas I received a calligraphy kit and used it throughout the winter months. Taking the time to practice lettering and watercolor really helped fuel my creativity as an artist. It allowed me time to slow down and be deliberate about what I was creating. Paired with a glass of wine and good music and it can also be quite therapeutic!
#3) Plan intentional time with your spouse, family, friends. Pack a bag, be spontaneous, get out of town. If you’re a small business owner, you know as well as I do that it’s difficult to make time for spontaneity and our own memory making, but life is short and it’s so important!
#4) Volunteer. Dedicate some of your time to something you’re passionate about. For me, this tends to put my life into a different perspective and I tend to be more grateful for what I’ve been given. For me, gratitude equals joy which leads to more fulfillment with life and business.
#5) Rest. Take advantage of having a Saturday off and sleep in. Watch a movie with your love. Snuggle up with your babies (or fur babies). Busy season will be here again before you know it and you’ll be wishing you were more intentional with your down time.
#6) Stay connected to the arts. Visit a museum, take a class or a workshop, read a new book, listen to some good live music. The more connected I feel to other artists, the more I feel like an artist myself.
#7) Network. Take another creative to coffee. Listen to their story. Be inspired by them!
What are some ways you stay inspired during a slower season? I would love to hear!
